Certified translations are frequently required by public authorities, courts, registry offices, universities, employers and other institutions. They are issued with a certification statement, official stamp, date and signature.

The term “sworn translator” is commonly used internationally. In North Rhine-Westphalia, however, the precise German legal designation for written translation is ermächtigte Übersetzerin, meaning “authorised translator”.

What Is a Court-Authorised Translator?

A court-authorised translator is entitled to certify the accuracy and completeness of a written translation. This authorisation is granted by the competent judicial authority after the translator has demonstrated the required professional and personal suitability.

The authorisation permits the translator to prepare certified translations of official documents and to confirm that the translated text reproduces the content of the submitted document accurately and completely.

Interpreters and translators perform different tasks. Interpreters transfer spoken language and may be generally sworn for court assignments. Translators work with written documents and are authorised to certify their translations.

Personal reliability is equally important. Court-authorised translators are required to perform their work conscientiously and impartially. They must also treat all documents and information entrusted to them as strictly confidential.

Accuracy, Confidentiality and Impartiality

A certified translation must reproduce the content of the submitted document completely and accurately. Illegible passages, alterations, omissions or other relevant characteristics of the original document must be identified where necessary.

How Is a Translation Certified?

Once the translation has been completed, the authorised translator adds a certification statement confirming its accuracy and completeness. The translation is then dated, signed and stamped.

The certification also records whether the source document was presented as an original, a certified copy, a scan or another form of reproduction where this information is relevant.
