This is probably the most well-known type of conference interpreting. The interpreter listens to the speaker on headphones in a soundproof booth and interprets directly with only a very short time delay. The immediate nature of this style of interpreting is also its main advantage, which is why it is mostly used when many languages need interpreting simultaneously, and the conference proceedings should be disrupted as little as possible.

Here there is a time delay between the speaker and the interpreter talking. The interpreter stands close to the speaker and makes notes on what he/she is saying. The interpreter then interprets this either in long sections or as a whole. Little technical effort is required, but please note that an event could run on significantly using this style of interpreting. For this reason, consecutive interpreting is more suitable for smaller events, such as a speech or welcome address, but above all, for events where only very few languages need interpreting.

This is the ideal interpreting style for business negotiations or court proceedings. Similar to consecutive interpreting, the interpreter relays individual sentences or sections of speech by a few participants. As this type of interpreting is so dynamic, it is only suitable for – as indeed the name suggests – dialogue between only a few participants.

This is another type of interpreting which requires little technical effort. Whispered interpreting or chuchotage means that the interpreter sits slightly behind one or, at the most, two participants and quietly translates what is being said. Alternatively – for example with site tours – mobile tour guide systems can also be used: the participants wear headphones with receivers while the interpreter speaks into a wireless microphone. Please note that this style of interpreting is hard work for both the listeners and the interpreter.
